General Information
ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL
If your child is absent from school it is necessary for a note to be forwarded to his/her teacher, preferably on the same day the child returns. Parents are also welcome to ring the school on the morning their child is absent. Children are not permitted to leave the school grounds unless they have written permission from their parents. Children leaving the school for any reason must be signed out by a parent/guardian. The sign-out book is located in the front foyer.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
Children should arrive at school after 8.30am and move directly to an area where supervision is provided. The library is open from 8:30am and there is a teacher on duty in the playground from 8:45am. In the afternoons children are expected to depart the school grounds promptly at 3.00pm. The only supervision provided after school is for students travelling home on school bus runs. Before and after school care is provided by CASAC for casual and permanent bookings.
ASSEMBLIES
Assemblies are held regularly throughout each term in the school hall. Parents are invited to attend. Each class takes a turn at presenting the assembly, which showcases work undertaken in the previous weeks. Information about the assembly schedule is in the Dates to Remember section of the newsletter and on the term calendar.
BUSES
School buses provide transport to and from the school as follows:
Government buses (ACTION) – Fairbairn, Pialligo, Duntroon
Private contractors (No fare payable) – Kowen Forest, Queanbeyan, Wamboin, Bungendore, Jerrabomberra.
Ticket selling agencies for ACTION buses include Campbell Newsagency and ACTION Information Centres.
EXCURSIONS
During the year, children are encouraged to take part in educational excursions. These range from short outings for the younger children to longer full day and school camps for senior children. Permission forms from parents are essential and final acceptance dates for payment and permission must be observed to keep the excursion costs within budget.

HOMEWORK
At the beginning of each year teachers explain the homework requirements expected of each child. It is intended that all homework be meaningful and bear a direct relationship to class work. Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 participate in a Home Reading program, which allows them to bring a book home each night and practice their reading skills with their family.
Students in Years 3-6 are given a homework grid that covers a two week period. The format follows Ian Lillico's model and promotes student independence and a more holistic approach to homework. The grid includes compulsory tasks such as reading, spelling, maths, housework and physical activity. It also includes a range of choice activities such as playing a board game and working on the computer. Students are asked to complete a group of compulsory and voluntary activities each fortnight.
ILLNESS/INJURY AT SCHOOL
When illness occurs at school, the child’s parents are advised by Front Office Staff. To assist with this, parents are asked to ensure the school has current telephone contact details on record. The school First Aid Officer will advise parents if it is necessary to collect their child from school. In the case of a serious injury, the ambulance will be called.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
If children have contracted an infectious disease such as measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox etc they should be kept at home until they are well. Parents are advised to check with the school for minimum mandatory periods of absence. Families will be informed when there is an occurrence of infectious disease in their child's class.
LIBRARY
The library is open from 8.30am to 3.00pm Monday to Friday. Children may borrow or return books before school or during their class library lesson. Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 may borrow two books each week, and Years 3-6 may borrow up to four books.
MEDICATION
Medication prescribed by a doctor must be clearly labelled with the child’s name and brought to the First Aid officer at the Front Office. Parents must give clear written instructions to the School regarding the timing and dosage of all medication required to be taken at school.
NEWSLETTER
The newsletter is published fortnightly and sent home with the eldest child in the family. The newsletter contains information about class activities, celebrates student achievements and provides a forum to discuss key aspects of student life at Campbell Primary School. An electronic copy is also available and may be organised through the Front Office.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE)
Campbell students participate in regular class PE lessons. Sports clinics are held for Preschool - Year 6 students in a wide range of sports including cricket, hockey, basketball, rugby and soccer. Visiting sports men and women run sessions with class teachers supervising.
Junior students participate in regular physical skill development lessons. They also participate in the Active Australia Program, which involves Year 6 students planning and teaching lessons under the supervision and guidance of class teachers.
School carnivals are held for swimming, athletics and cross-country running. Students from 8 years of age may then be selected to compete in the District carnival and the ACT carnival.
Interschool sport is played in cricket, netball, soccer and other sports as organised.
Each child in Years K-6 is placed in one of the following sports houses and house captains are elected at the beginning of each year:
Britten - Blue
Davidson - Green
Hodge - Red
Walker - Yellow
REDUCING THE RISK OF ANAPHYLAXIS
Campbell Primary is a nut-free school. Our aim is to reduce the possibility of an anaphylactic reaction in children who have this life-threatening condition.
What does it mean to parents to be a nut-free school? In practical terms this translates to:
-
No peanut butter on food for recess and lunch at school
-
No products with peanut listed as an ingredient brought to school for recess or lunch.
Please note that Australian made products (with known stringent manufacturing conditions) containing the warning "may contain traces of nuts" are considered to be of a relatively low risk and may be included in children's lunches and for recess. We would greatly appreciate your assistance and support to successfully implement this policy. If children come to school with peanut products in their lunch, they will be required to wash their hands and rinse their mouth before going outside to play. This practice has worked well in the past and reduces the risk of an anaphylactic reaction in children who are allergic to peanuts.
SCHOOL BANKING
Parent volunteers run School Banking where students have the opportunity to make weekly deposits into their School Bank Account.
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL - SRC
Two students from each class in Kindergarten to Year 6 are elected each semester. The Student Representative Council meets regularly with a member of staff to examine matters of interest to them and their class members. The SRC acts as a focus for student opinion and in the development and implementation of policies that directly affect students. SRC members are able to experience a leadership role in their school community by representing their class at SRC meetings and reporting back to their class on SRC discussions and developments.
STUDENT REQUISITES
Each year the school organises a stationary pack for your child. The cost of the pack will cover all items required by your child during the school year. These book packs are organised by Jacaranda Educational Supplies. The list includes all the requirements that your child will need for the next school year. You may choose to purchase the entire pack or delete items that your child already owns eg: pencil case, rulers etc. The contents of the pack need to be given to the class teacher to be given out and replenished as the need arises. This eliminates the need for parents to restock pencil cases at the beginning of every term.
VOLUNTEERS
Campbell Primary encourages, values and welcomes volunteers to be involved in all aspects of the school program.
Volunteers are involved in a large number of activities at the school which include:
-
Assisting in the classroom
-
Tutoring small groups of students
-
Assisting in the School Library
-
Coaching sporting teams
-
Participating on excursions
-
Providing transport for excursions
-
Mentoring students
-
Fundraising for school initiatives
-
Acting as class contact coordinators
Volunteers are generally parents, carers, relatives of parents or carers, or members of the community known to the school. Volunteers are required to complete a Volunteer Nomination Form and the sign-in register on arrival at school. Further information is available from the front office staff.
