Dear families,
Congratulations to all students who participated in the swimming carnival. It was a day filled with fun, friendship, and positive team spirit! The races were intense and certainly showcased many of our talented swimmers. Our novelty events were a huge success and enabled all our children to have a positive experience in the pool.
As a school community we are always extremely grateful for our parent volunteers! Thank you for your support and assistance in helping the children to have an amazing day and remain safe near the water.
We are sure we sent home many tired children on Thursday night!
School Improvement
Campbell Primary School is committed to focusing on the learning of all our students in a community-based model. Teachers in our school are part of a collaborative team, where members work interdependently towards common goals for which every member is mutually accountable.
Campbell Primary School’s current School Strategic Plan (2020-2024) has two strategic priorities:
Priority 1: Increase growth in student performance in numeracy across all year levels
- Strategies
- Embed a consistent approach to programming for mathematics K-6, incorporating the scope and sequence
- Refine and streamline explicit instruction and opportunities around ‘numeracy’ and problem-solving skills
- Investigate options for a summative assessment to be trialled in K-2
- Leadership: Monitor teaching and learning programs by providing timely and personalised feedback
- Routinely share Units of Inquiry, sharing elements that authentically integrate mathematics
- Engage with Academy of Future Skills for teacher mentoring and support, incorporating mathematics within the STEM specialists’
Priority 2: Increase growth in student performance in writing across all year levels
- Strategies
- Embed clear ‘non-negotiables,’ which are incorporated into the Teaching and Learning Planner and visited routinely throughout each term
- 1A Consistent use of individual student writing goals P-6
- 1B Consistent use of 1:1 student conferencing K-6
- Embed a consistent approach to programming for writing P-2, utilising the scope and sequence and continue developing the year 3-6 S&S
- Leadership: Monitoring teaching and learning programs providing timely and personalised feedback
- Routinely share Units of Inquiry sharing elements that authentically integrate writing
The goal of the school’s strategic plan is to improve the learning outcomes of all students. Throughout the year the newsletter will be one of the avenues used to keep you informed of our strategic directions and to report our progress.
2023 Voluntary Contribution
Each year our school, together with other public schools in the ACT, asks our families to make a voluntary contribution to supplement our school’s operating budget.
- Your contribution goes directly to providing additional resources that will benefit the learning and development of all our students. Funds received this year will support the school in providing:
STEM resources: Plastic beakers, funnels and measuring cylinders, Pasco sensors, microbits, Makey Makey, Sphero Indi and STELR kits - PE and sports equipment: shade covers, classroom/playground sport tubs, playground maintenance
- Art and music resources: xylophones, specialist art supplies
Contributions for 2023 are:
- Voluntary Contribution P-6 $130 per child – which provides for additional teaching and learning resources across the school
- $260 for two or more children
Families can choose how they wish the school to use their contribution by selecting one of the following:
- 100% to be used flexibly by the school (for those items listed above)
- 50% to be used flexibly and 50% library trust fund
- 100% to the library trust fund (to buy items that must remain in the library and is tax deductible)
We recognise the financial circumstances of our families are all different and every effort has been made to keep these amounts low. We understand if this contribution is not affordable for you and appreciate any amount you contribute. If your financial situation allows, you may choose to contribute more than this amount for which the school would be most grateful.
We encourage you to make your contributions by the end of Term 1 2023 if possible. It is also possible to make your payment in instalments by contacting our front office on 6142 3580.
Thank you for your continuing financial support to enhance the learning experience for all our students at Campbell Primary School.
The hard copy has been sent home with your child this week with the payment information.
Thank you to those 4.9% of our Preschool families and 7% of our Kindergarten to Year 6 families who have already made their voluntary contribution to the school.
Kind regards,
Paula Kinsman
Principal
Buddy Reading in 1/2
This week we began Buddy Reading in the Year 1/2 classrooms. We were fortunate to have several families visit to read with a small group of students.
Buddy Reading is a beautiful opportunity to read aloud to practise fluency, share the experience of reading with a peer and is a great excuse to have families back in the school!
The morning sessions start at 9am on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Volunteers in Kindergarten
We would like to invite families into the Kindergarten classrooms in the morning to work with students during their independent reading sessions. In the past, parents have been available to read with students and change home readers.
If you are available to support, please email either Esther Riebe (esther.riebe@ed.act.edu.au) or Fleur Forster (fleur.forster@ed.act.edu.au). We would love to see parents/carers back in the classrooms.
NAPLAN
Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in NAPLAN during Week 7 this term. At Campbell Primary School, NAPLAN Testing will follow the schedule below:
Between now and the commencement of NAPLAN testing, students will have opportunities to engage in platform familiarity exercises.
Classroom teachers and School Leadership will work together to determine reasonable adjustments for learners who may require additional supports to complete the NAPLAN assessments.
Families who would like to discuss NAPLAN or explore withdrawing their child/ren from participating, please contact Kate Herrington via email: kate.herrington@ed.act.edu.au or contact the front office to arrange a chat.
Don’t take shortcuts when it comes to parking safety around ours schools.
Access Canberra will be actively monitoring all school areas using Licence Plate Recognition vans, targeting illegal and unsafe parking:
- at signposted ‘no stopping’ or ‘no parking’ zones
- in bus zones
- on zebra crossings
- in disabled bays
- on nature strips and across footpaths
- in bus or bike lanes
- where the driver has blocked off nearby residents driveways
Penalties for doing the wrong thing range from $123 upwards to $615. If you’re doing the wrong thing - you will get caught - and fined.
Remember!
It’s okay to park a little further away and walk the rest of the way. While at the time it might feel inconvenient, every time you do the wrong thing, you put a life at risk.
To assist drivers to understand their obligations under the Australian Road Rules in relation to parking and how parking is regulated in the Territory, the Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate has developed the ACT parking infringements guide (PDF 5.0MB) or (DOC 8.4MB).
Examples of where it is illegal to stop or park your vehicle include:
- on a taxi rank or bus stop
- in a no stopping zone
- in a no parking zone (you can stop but not park)
- on a traffic island, the median strip or plantation in a divided carriageway
- in a loading zone unless you have an loading zone parking permit or the vehicle is specifically permitted to use the loading zone
- across any passage, thoroughfare, entrance, driveway or foot crossing
- so that any part of the vehicle overhangs any line marking or parking space or bay
- anywhere other than in a marked bay in a car park marked into bays
- on a footpath
- on a nature strip
- on the wrong side of the road and not in the direction of traffic
Stopping in a ‘No Parking’ zone is only permitted for picking up or dropping off passengers and/or goods. A motorist must not leave a vehicle unattended in a ‘No Parking’ zone and can remain there for a maximum of two minutes (unless otherwise indicated). Leaving a vehicle unattended means being three metres or more away from it.
School security:
Our Building Services Officer walks the perimeter of the school opening the locked doors at 8:30am each morning and 3:30pm each afternoon ensuring all doors are securely locked. Any time after 3:45pm, if you open a door, please ensure you firmly close it again behind you.
Remember, we do not have any teacher supervision of students on site prior to 8:45am. If you need to drop your children off at school earlier than this, please contact CASAC to make a booking.
School contacts:
Love of sport was in the air this Valentine’s Day when Hockey ACT brought their passion for hockey to Campbell Primary in the form of the 2023 Hockey ACT Schools Roadshow.
The opportunity to try out the sport was snapped up by Years 2 to 4 who got the chance to spend 30 minutes out on the oval with a wonderful duo of coaches who took them through the basics of the game, including dribbling and tackling, in a fun and fast paced series of drills and games.
The sessions were thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated, and students are to be commended on their enthusiasm and demonstration of our PBL values of Safe Respectful Learners.
A big thankyou to Participation Officer from Hockey ACT Emilie Hall for the opportunity. Anyone looking to further their hockey journey can find information about local clubs here.
During Week 3 Campbell Primary Year 3 and 4 students were very privileged to host a group of Canberra Raiders superstars who delivered the 2023 INSPIRE workshop.
The theme this year was resilience and support and the session included opportunities for students to learn about what resilience means, how to develop it, when to ask for help and who in their community can provide support.
This engaging presentation included videos from current NRL players, hands on activities to demonstrate communication and teamwork, plus lots of opportunities to ask questions and get autographs. For anyone interested there is more information about the program on the NRL website here.
Campbell Primary staff and students would like to thank players Danny Levi, Josh Papalii, James Schiller, and Brad Morkos, presenter Matthew Williams from NRL Ulladulla and organiser Taylor Giggins from NRL Canberra for their time and energy in delivering this amazing program.
We hope to see the Raiders back for the “Road to Glory” session on the way to the 2023 Raiders grand final win. We promise to find bigger chairs for the players!
Australian Cricketers Association Masters Tour
What do a former Australian cricket team fast bowler, batsman, wicket keeper and spin bowler have in common? They were all at Campbell Primary School last week!
Year 1 and 2 were delighted to take up the invitation to host a visit from retired Australian cricketers Stuart Karppinen, Rob Quiney, Ryan Carters and Jason Krejza along with cricket manager and host Megan Pauwells. The crew were in town from all over Australia to compete in the Australian Masters Festival of Cricket held in Canberra last weekend to raise funds for defibrillators for local clubs.
After a brief introduction and question and answer session it was out to the oval to teach, share and show off our cricket skills! Using fun and engaging games and drills students had a chance to have a try at bowling, batting, and fielding under the expert guidance of former stars of the game. Energy, excitement, and engagement was very high, and it was wonderful to see students’ confidence grow in their skills over the course of the session.
A big thankyou to Adrian Brunker from Cricket ACT for the opportunity. Cricket season is wrapping up for the Summer but there are always indoor and development opportunities in the ACT. Check out the website https://www.cricketact.com.au/ for more information.
Campbell Primary School P&C Mosaic Project
The wheels are in motion for our Preschool to Year 6 students to engage with local artist, Tina van Rayy, on a beautiful outdoor mosaic artwork for our school.
We are still working out the finer details and logistics of timetabling for each student to have an opportunity to work with Tina on either the main mosaic or smaller boards that can be kept indoors. We are hoping work will commence either at the end of this term or very early in Term 2.
In the meantime, we need your help!
From next week we will be collecting any assortments of ceramic, tile or glass, or ‘found objects’ such as interesting rocks, shells, beads, old jewellery and any other bits and pieces you have around your home. These contributions will be included in either the main mosaic, or the smaller boards that our junior school students will create with Tina. Keep an eye out for a collection box at the front office!
This photo shows the location that the outdoor mosaic will be displayed:
If you are curious about Tina’s beautiful artworks and creations, many can be seen here on her website: https://glassicalbits.net/
We are very thankful for the P&C’s generosity in funding this project. It will be an enriching experience that the Campbell community will can enjoy for many years to come!

Being COVID Smart remains a priority for all ACT public schools in 2023.
Students, staff and visitors are reminded to:
- Stay home if unwell and get tested for COVID-19
- Stay up to date with your vaccinations
- Practise good hand and respiratory hygiene
- Physically distance from others when in public places
Individual schools may implement additional measures to manage COVID-19 if deemed necessary in a particular setting. Any changes will be communicated to parents and carers.
If your child has COVID-19, you must let the school know. We recommend keeping your child home for at least five days.
RATs are again available from the school for students in Term 1 from the front office.
