Welcome
Welcome back all of our families to 2024! It has been such a wonderful start to the term, watching the students reconnect/connect with friends, teachers, and the greater school community.
Teachers have worked closely with their classes to build positive learning environments. They are facilitating conversations and setting expectations around what learning should look like, feel like, and sound like. These conversations are helping to create a class culture that is respectful and inclusive. When parents/carers visit for our up-and-coming Yarns they will see the agreements on their child’s classroom wall. Below are some examples of classroom working walls, displaying their agreements:

Families will notice that this year each class has created a class name. Kerry Johnston (Executive teacher and member of our Wellbeing Committee) has included a piece in this newsletter explaining the thinking behind the importance of a class name and the processes undertaken while creating them. Your child’s term overview will contain their chosen name.
Invigorated Vision and Mission/Values
As most of our families would know, we had the pleasure of announcing our new Campbell Primary School Vision and Mission/Values and over the holidays we are very excited to have received the graphics from the graphic designer.
The values of Curious, Connected, and Caring and their symbols have been added to the school’s letterhead, were considered when creating teachers’ professional learning, and helped guide our 2024 Annual Action Plan. We are utilsing our values to support Campbell Primary School’s culture of setting high expectations for all community members safely and inclusively.
I am so excited to be working together this year, if we haven't already met, please come and see me, I am always out and about before and after school.
Take care
Community Play Group
We are very excited to be inviting families in the Campbell community to join in on fortnightly play group sessions in the preschool outdoor space. Please feel welcome to drop in so that your little ones can have a play while you meet other families! All members of the Campbell Primary School community are welcome.
Individual/Personalised Learning Plans (ILP, PLP)
Parents and carers of students who are on ILP/PLP’s can expect to be shared 2024 plans in coming weeks. These plans are comprised of goals that are specifically targeted to address the needs of individual students, who may require support in the classroom. Goals can be academic or with social/emotional growth in mind. If you are the parent of a student who is new to Campbell Primary School who was on a similar plan at a previous school, please inform your child’s classroom teacher at next week’s Getting to Know You Yarn.

ANU Psychology Clinic
The ANU Psychology Clinic has reached out to the school to inform us that there are currently no waiting lists for core cognitive and academic assessments for children 6 years and older. As a training clinic, these assessments are significantly more affordable than other alternatives. Assessments can occur within a context of concerns about specific learning difficulties, intellectual difficulties, or as a part of a larger medical assessment or ongoing treatment. The clinic does not conduct assessments for ADHD, Autism or giftedness.
If you would like more information about what the ANU Psychology Clinic may be able to offer your family, please reach out to me.

Let’s be safe, respectful learners in our curious, connected and caring community!
It’s a new school year and a new start for our Class Dojo points!
In 2024 all our Campbell students will have the same opportunity to earn all our PBL badges. Everyone will start the year working towards Bronze in all three categories of ‘Safe’, ‘Respectful’ and ‘Learner’. We have made it more attainable to achieve the silver and gold badges so that it is possible for all students to earn all the badges in one year.
We’re hoping to present some Stanley Stag badges in 2024 – will it be someone in your family?
To earn a Bronze: 50 dojo points in any one category.
To earn a Silver: 1 bronze badge plus 50 more points in the same category
To earn a Gold: 1 bronze badge and 1 silver badge plus 50 more points in the same category.
To earn a Stanley Stag Badges: 3 gold badges – one from each category.
Our first badge presentation for the year will be at Friday Yuma in Week 5.
Happy learning everyone!
The Wellbeing Committee
Have you ever noticed that you can be deep in conversation, in a room full of people, when someone across the room mentions your name you instantly tune in?
Such is the importance of our name.
A class name offers a similar sense of belonging and identity and links beautifully with our Connect school value.
This year the children have been exploring the concept of a class name based on the Olympics. They may have even discussed some ideas with you!
This choosing of a class name has offered some great opportunities to be curious. The students have been talking, thinking and investigating not only the history and nature of the Olympics but how the ideals and goals of the games can be applied to learning.
The choosing of a class name fosters connection. Building bonds to each other within the class, to this point in time - a place along the journey of learning and to the wider Campbell Primary School community - each class will have a name based on the Olympic theme.
The choosing of a class name affords caring as students collaborate, listen and work as a team to discuss ideas.
And this is only the beginning!
This learning will continue throughout the year.
We will be using the class name on certificates, reports, notes home, on class lists, everywhere that class labels are used.
We appreciate that using the class names might take a little getting used to but we invite you to join us in this journey, thank you for your support.
We are delighted to share our chosen names with you and look forward to sharing the learning that went on behind the name very soon.

Week 7-8 (13-30 March)
NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 during March. It is the only national assessment all Australian students do.
The NAPLAN testing time frame commences Wednesday 13th March and continues through to Friday 22nd March. A schedule outlining Campbell Primary School testing timeframe will be circulated to families.
Students sit assessments in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Four papers in total. Questions assess content linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics.
Students are not expected to study for NAPLAN.
You can support your child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is a part of their school program and reminding them to simply do their best.
ACARA does not recommend excessive preparation for NAPLAN or the use of services by coaching providers.
To see the types of questions and tools available in the online NAPLAN assessments you can visit nap.edu.au/onlineassessment/public-demonstration-site.
Please contact Al or Kerry by direct email or via the Front Office if you have any questions.

A HUGE welcome to 2024! Welcome back for our returning families and a very special welcome to all our new families.
My name is Karyn Penney and I am the Defence School Mentor (DSM) for Campbell Primary School. I am employed by Campbell Primary School and funded by the Department of Defence to support students from active service Australian Defence Force (ADF) families, particularly through the challenges of frequent relocation and parental absence. My role also includes connecting families to local community and defence support and opportunities. I am privileged to form part of the Campbell Primary School support team that also includes our wonderful admin staff, dedicated Learning Support Assistants (LSA’s), and our school psychologist. Together we work to provide the best possible support to all members of our Campbell Primary School community.
We are so very proud of all of our new students, who have showed great courage and resilience during their first two weeks at their new school. It can be an incredibly stressful time for students and families both and all should be commended for their efforts so far. There will be up and down days, but they will become progressively easier as the term goes on. I encourage any families with any concerns around transition to please get in contact early so we can check in and provide additional supports if needed. A huge shout out to our returning students as well that have been amazing buddies for these first few weeks and made school days much less scary for our new friends – you should be very proud (we are!).
For those ADF families that have come to us on posting from interstate please be aware of the ability to access education support via Defence Member and Family Support’s (DMFS, formerly DCO) Education Assistance Scheme. This allows those impacted by relocation to access reimbursement for tutoring support in areas identified as requiring extra tuition or where a subject wasn’t previously offered (for example Japanese). Additional information is available via the link here. The application form AD301 is available via webforms for the serving member, or via the DMFS helpline on 1800 624 608 at any time. Recent changes mean you will require a supporting letter from Campbell Primary School which I am happy to arrange, as well as a report card from your previous school. Kindergarten students are ineligible unless posting occurred after the commencement of the school year. Please let me know if you have any questions. DMFS are also hosting a welcome event for those new to Canberra - you can find the details and secure tickets here.
I hope that you have been able to take some time to have a look at our school website for lots of information about the school. There are also two facebook groups connected to the school with exciting updates from our P&C and the school. You can find them here: https://www.facebook.com/campbellprimaryschoolcbr and here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/campbellprimarypc as well as the website https://www.campbellps.act.edu.au/. It can be very valuable to have a look through the photos to find some events and activities to get excited about – we have a lot! Musicals, discos, sports, excursions, carnivals, concerts, clubs and much more! It’s going to be another big year.
I am at Campbell Primary School full time from 9am until 4pm and can usually be found either in the playground or supporting within classrooms. I am always happy to meet with parents to answer any questions you may have - please check in with the front office and they will locate me for you. I am also available via email at Karyn.heitmann@ed.act.edu.au.

Supporting student safety – mobile speed and parking vans
As school re-commences for term 1, we are reminding parents and carers to please drive and park safely and legally, at and around school grounds.
Access Canberra has notified us that mobile speed and parking vans will be in operation. These enforcement teams play a critical role in supporting our students get to and from school safely and we thank them for their ongoing support.
In addition to sticking to the speed limit, please remember to park safely – including not parking across pedestrian crossings, in no stopping zones, on corners, verges and double parking. Unsafe and illegal parking can reduce visibility of our students and motorists to see each other, creating a significant hazard when students cross the road.
We all have an important role to play in supporting road safety. Let’s work together to keep our kids safe.
Parent and Carer Online Safety Webinars – Preschool to Year 12
Throughout the year the Education Directorate’s Online Safety (eSafety) Education team offer free parent and carer information webinars about supporting their children with online safety. These webinars look at understanding the current eSafety issues children and young people are experiencing, how to support children to be safe online, resources for preventing and responding to online issues, and where to go for further support.
The Online Safety Education team are committed to supporting school communities to develop their online safety skills and knowledge. The team aim to increase the number of safe and positive online experiences students have and reduce the number of online safety incidents that impact on learning environments.
There are multiple webinars running each term with both afternoon and evening times available that will help your family be more confident and safer online by:
- understanding online safety and risks young people face
- learning strategies to prevent and respond to online issues
- supporting your child to be safe online
- knowing where to go for further support.
