Student-Centered Improvement Visits (SCIV) Term 2, Week 4
In previous years, schools within the ACT Education Directorate would have a formalised review completed every five years. The review and its findings would help create the school’s five-year strategic plan. Last year the Directorate created a principal consultative group that worked together, creating a new review framework for school improvement. Campbell Primary is due for its review this year and will be utilisng the new framework and processes.
The Student-Centred Improvement Framework (the Framework) places students at the centre of school improvement cycles, answering what works for whom, under what circumstances and why. This is achieved through self-evaluative internal review led by effective and targeted use of data and spirals of inquiry, cross system collaboration, strategic alignment and complementary external review.
Under the Framework, the improvement process is cyclical and adjustable. Implementing, embedding and sustaining improvement consists of:
- Ongoing inquiry: Ongoing cycles of inquiry, conducted regularly (eg, every term) and homing in on dimensions and elements requiring investigation, and uplift (informed by evidence).
- Regular self-evaluation: Supplemented and supported by school improvement visits.
- Multi-year: An external review (approximately once every four years).
Over the next couple of weeks, the leadership team is gathering evidence to submit against the three domains of: Learning, Leading, and Wellbeing. This evidence will be sourced from our teachers, our students and the community.
In Week 4 of next term, our review team will be on site. The external review will typically take place over two days (though this may be extended to three depending on the size and complexity of the setting). The structure of the review will be determined by the pre-review visit, with a focus on ascertaining the school's strengths, opportunities for improvement, and evidence of impact. The Review Team will produce a report on the outcome of the review. Following the external review, a post-review visit will be scheduled.
We will keep all families informed and up-to-date with this exciting new progress and if families have any questions please contact me.
If your child/ren attended camp this week, we hope that they had a wonderful time and haven't returned too exhausted. A very big thank you to Ms Aya, Ms J, Ms Thane, Ms Jones and Mr DK for attending and supporting our students during their time away - without your support there would be no camp.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.
Take care
ILP/PLP Meetings
Next week we will be kicking off our Individual/Personalised Learning Plan cycle, with meetings between classroom teachers, parents, a member of the school executive team and in some cases, the school psychologist. We are looking forward to collaborating to determine learning goals and the best steps forward for many of our students. If you have any questions about the ILP/PLP process, please feel welcome to get in touch with me.
Curious Kids at Campbell
We are on the lookout for ‘Curious Kids’ at Campbell, who might be willing to share their learning with the school community at Yuma on Monday and Friday mornings. Our lens on curiosity is linked to our new school values.
Last week, we heard from Jessice W in The Opals, who has been researching the impact that each person on Earth’s emissions may be having on our planet. Jessica has made some very well-considered predictions about the future of our planet, highlighting the need for individuals to take action to produce less emissions.
Jonah B in the Archers told us some interesting facts about possums, that he learned about in a book from the library. The Year 1’s have shown a lot of interest in the possum family that live in the tree outside their classroom, so it was wonderful that Jonah and some of his friends took the initiative to do some further research.
We are very excited to be celebrating the curiosity that so many of our learners are displaying. If your little person would like to share some of their learning with the school, please ask them to speak to one of the teachers on duty on Monday and Friday morning before school.
Week 7-8 (13-30 March)
NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 during March. It is the only national assessment all Australian students do.
The NAPLAN testing time frame commences Wednesday 13 March and continues through to Friday 22 March. A schedule outlining Campbell Primary School testing timeframe will be circulated to families.
Students sit assessments in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Four papers in total. Questions assess content linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics.
Students are not expected to study for NAPLAN.
You can support your child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is a part of their school program and reminding them to simply do their best.
ACARA does not recommend excessive preparation for NAPLAN or the use of services by coaching providers.
To see the types of questions and tools available in the online NAPLAN assessments you can visit nap.edu.au/onlineassessment/public-demonstration-site.
Please contact Al or Kerry by direct email or via the Front Office if you have any questions.
Not going to lie, the thought of large wooden sticks in the hands of some of our littlest students brought some trepidation this week! On the contrary our amazing Year 1-4 classes had an incredible (and very safe) time trying out the sport of hockey. Under the expert eye of wonderful and experienced coaches from Hockey ACT, students learned to dribble, pass and tackle through a series of fun and educational drills and games. It was a fantastic opportunity to try something different for health and physical education and was thoroughly enjoyed by students and staff alike.
A huge thank you goes out to Lisa and the team from Hockey ACT for visiting us again this year. If students have “caught the bug” or you are looking for something fun and free to do this weekend check out their 'come and try day' on either Saturday (Northside) or Sunday (Southside). We hear there will be lots of Canberra Chill players in attendance and possibly a current Kookaburra’s prospective Olympian! All the details are in the flyer included with the photos.
Congratulations to all students who participated - the visiting coaches were incredibly complimentary of your safe, respectful, learning.
University of Canberra Capitals and The Tradies Club Hoops Program
It’s been a big week for sport at Campbell Primary School with session three of our 2024 Hoops Program taking place on Tuesday for Year 5.
The session was delivered by the super stars and professional basketball players of the UC Capitals Alex “Bunts” Bunton and team Co-Captain Alex “Sharpy” Sharp. We are definitely making the most of our new court facilities with Year 5 working hard on basketball skills, fitness, teamwork, communication, and leadership throughout the sessions.
We have been so fortunate between Term 4 2023 and this term to have hosted almost all of the Canberra Capitals team, including recent Australian Opals Olympic qualifier Jade Melbourne. Some of them like us so much they have been more than once. Hopefully we can entice Japanese import Monica Okoye to come next time and share some of her culture along with her skills!
A huge thank you to the Tradies Club for their continued sponsorship of this amazing program, Griffin from UC Caps for his ongoing support and coordination, and of course to ALL of the players for gifting their time and knowledge to help the next generation develop.
The UC Capitals play their final game of the 23/24 season this Saturday at 2:30pm at the Convention Centre. If you haven’t caught a game yet please get along and enjoy the experience. Hopefully we can cheer the girls home for a final win of the season and spoil the Boomers hopes of a finals place!

Bus Safety Week 2024: Safety never goes out of style!
“What’s this coming along the road? It’s a bus it’s a bus… it’s a school bus!” This week is Bus Safety Week 2024, and we are going back in time to 1989 with the original Bus Safe Rap because safety never goes out of style. Bus Safety Week is an opportunity to remind students of the importance of safe behaviours when on and around buses, bus stops and interchanges.
Brush up on your safety skills and see if you can do the Bus Safe Rap:
· Signal the driver: Always signal the driver a safe distance from the curb by raising your arm – and giving the driver plenty of notice.
· Wait safely: Wait until the bus has left before you cross. Never walk in front of a bus, as other road users may not see you.
· Respect bus stops: Bus stops and interchanges aren’t playgrounds. Avoid running or playing ball games while waiting for a bus.
· Stay alert: Put your phone away and turn the music down when moving around bus interchanges and crossing roads.
Let's showcase our commitment to safety as a community, from the bus stop to crossing the road, make safety your daily jam.
Visit Transport Canberra’s travel safely to school webpage for resources and information to make sure all students have a safe journey to and from school.
