Dear families and carers,
I thank Karyn Penney, Cathy Dee, the school choir, and our special guests from the broader defence community for our recent successful Anzac Day assembly. The event was a poignant and respectful tribute to the men and women who have served our country, and I am incredibly proud of our students' behaviour and participation.
Anzac Day is essential in our nation's history, commemorating the bravery, selflessness, and sacrifice of our service men and women. Our younger generation needs to understand and appreciate the significance of this day, and our students demonstrated their respect and understanding with their exemplary behaviour during the assembly.
As a school community, we are committed to teaching our students about the values and ideals that underpin Anzac Day, such as courage, mateship, and sacrifice. We hope this assembly has helped our students develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of these values and their importance in our society. Once again, thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our Anzac Day assembly.
Reporting student achievement in the ACT 2023
ACT public schools are expected to provide a formal written report to parents and carers of students from Preschool to Year 12 twice a year. These formal reports form part of the suite of relevant and purposeful opportunities schools use to communicate student learning to families throughout the year.
In addition, parent interviews occur in Terms 1 and 3 to ensure parents receive regular opportunities to engage with the school and celebrate student growth. Our school also shares student learning and progress throughout the year through informal processes, including learning showcases, assembly performances, shared reading, STEM evenings and online platforms such as Facebook, SEESAW and our school newsletter.
Upcoming written reports for the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2 will revert to business as usual for 2023. Including written comments in semester reports remains a school-based decision and is not compulsory. Campbell Primary School will provide a summative comment on student reports addressing student learning, strategies for growth and general well-being.
A visit from Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry
It was an exciting day at Campbell Primary School as we welcomed the Deputy Chief Minister, Yvette Berry, to our school. The visit was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our new contemporary learning spaces and the future-focused learning in our classrooms. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to share our innovative approach to teaching and learning with the deputy chief minister. She was impressed with the level of engagement and enthusiasm our students displayed in their learning and was interested in our focus on collaborative and creative learning.
Our school leaders did an exceptional job welcoming our special guest and escorting her on a guided tour through the school. They showed her our new learning spaces, designed to encourage collaboration and creativity, and our students demonstrated their learning through various activities.
We sincerely thank the P&C and School Board for supporting this special visit. It was an honour to have the deputy chief minister visit our school, and we are grateful for the opportunity to showcase the fantastic teaching and learning that occurs each day.
The visit was a huge success, and we hope it will lead to even greater recognition and support for innovative and future-focused learning at our school. Once again, congratulations to everyone who made this special visit possible, and thank you for making it such a wonderful morning for everyone involved.
Kind regards,
Paula Kinsman
Published Author- Arabella H
One of our amazing Year 4 students, Arabella H, beat 100’s of other children to be a regular contributing journalist for the Just Kidding magazine.
Just Kidding is a children’s publication full of lots of fun stuff for children to read. In this issue Arabella has reviewed the SpongeBob SquarePants Krusty Cook off Switch game, where she has described in detail why she recommends the game.
Well done, Arabella! We are looking forward to your next contribution!
The Smith Family donation
As many of you will be aware, our students created a piece of artwork to sell to their families at the fete last term. The sales from the artworks totalled $600, with half being a donation to The Smith Family. We have received an email of gratitude from The Smith Family:
Wow!! What an amazing outcome! Your support ensures that they have access to learning essentials such as school uniforms, new schoolbooks, stationery, and access to out of school learning support. Thank you!
On behalf of The Smith Family, we thank all our students for their efforts.
Campbell Primary Mosaic Project
This term has kicked off with the Campbell Primary Mosaic Project, generously funded by the P&C. Students from Preschool to Year 6 all had the opportunity to spend time with local artist, Tina van Raay, for a hands-on mosaic workshop.
Several students in Years 5/6 enjoyed helping Tina grout and polish the main mosaic which will be displayed on the external wall of the school, outside the corridor to the hall. All students from Preschool to Year 6 enjoyed working with Tina to create lots of mini-mosaic boards. Next, we need to find a spot to display them all!
This was an incredible opportunity for our learners, and we were blown away by how engaged and enthusiastic everyone was to participate. Special thanks to Tina, for her boundless creativity, energy, and patience as she worked with over 300 students to create many, many masterpieces for our community to enjoy for years to come! Big thank you to the P&C for providing our school with this enriching opportunity.
Birrigai Long Day Adventure - Years 3 and 4
On Wednesday 24 May (Week 5), students from Years 3 and 4 will be off to Birrigai for a long day adventure! Due to availability, we are fortunate to be spending slightly more time at Birrigai than last year, leaving school at precisely 09:00 am, and returning at 04:50 pm. This will allow students to participate in more activities and maximise our time away from school. Permission notes have been sent home to families this week. If you require another note, please contact the front office. We are looking forward to this action-packed adventure day and can’t wait to share the highlights with you!
ANZAC Assembly
On Friday 28 April Campbell Primary School paused to remember and reflect on the service and sacrifice of Australian Defence Force members both past and present. It was wonderful to finally be able to have a full school and our families for this very special assembly after such a long time.
It was a beautiful and moving commemoration, led by our very capable school captains and supported by just a few members of our very large community of ADF families. Featuring an extremely polished catafalque party from the Australian Federation Guard and supported by bugler Musician Ryan Koroknai from the RMC Band, our assembly format closely followed that of a full dawn service, allowing students to learn about the history, customs and traditions of ANZAC Day.
We wanted to extend a very special thankyou to our guest speakers; Major Timothy Wildin who gave an amazing and very relatable keynote address, Sergeant Virginia Herschell along with daughter Cora who did a beautiful job of delivering The Ode, and Mr Ryan Beevor along with daughter Charlotte, whose recitation of the very moving poem “ANZAC Day” by D. Hunter brought a tear to the eye. Appreciation also goes to the junior choir led by Ms Dee who worked incredibly hard on their song “Blowing in the Wind” by Bob Dylan.
Finally, I wanted to pay tribute to the respect shown by our entire student body throughout the serious and sombre assembly and especially during the minute of silence. They are the keepers of the future of our traditions of ANZAC Day; I am confident our commitment to always “Remember Them” is in good hands.

Should you have any questions or concerns I am available to CPS families Monday to Friday 9:00am–3:30pm. Should you wish to make contact please call the front office or email me directly at Karyn.heitmann@ed.act.edu.au

Active Streets for Schools Program
Increased traffic is common around schools for short periods each morning and afternoon during the peak periods.
One way our school is trying to beat the congestion is through the Active Streets program. More people walking and riding to school will help to create ‘active streets’ – where drivers are more aware of our school and slow down when children are present.
You can show your support by driving less or avoiding the main carparks at the school. Try one of the part way drop-off locations on our school map or walking or riding the entire way. It doesn’t need to be every day, choosing to walk or ride once or twice a week is a great starting point and will make a significant difference to create a safer school environment for our students.
Issue 3 of Book club is out now! Online orders are due by Friday 12 May 2023.
The catalogue can also be found on the Scholastic Loop website.

While restrictions are no longer in place, we do need to remember that COVID is still in our community.
Keep up those COVID Smart behaviours at school and at work to protect yourself and everyone around you.
Being COVID Smart remains a priority for all ACT public schools in 2023.
Students, staff and visitors are reminded to:
- Stay home if unwell and get tested for COVID-19
- Stay up to date with your vaccinations
- Practise good hand and respiratory hygiene
- Physically distance from others when in public places
Individual schools may implement additional measures to manage COVID-19 if deemed necessary in a particular setting. Any changes will be communicated to parents and carers.
If your child has COVID-19, you must let the school know. We recommend keeping your child home for at least five days.
