Dear families and carers,
P&C Mural
Over the holidays our incredible P&C were very busy hanging our stunning murals. On Monday 17 July, the artist Tina van Raay was invited, along with our Year 5/6 students to help unveil the new addition to our play areas. The three panels represent water, earth and sky and were based on the artwork created for the fete’s student art gallery. The detail of this artwork is breathtaking, and we hope families (maybe during next week’s Parent/Teacher meetings) have a closer look. A very big thank you to the artist Tina, Ms Herrington for making sure every student was able to experience contributing to a mural and our very generous P&C for funding this opportunity.
Parent/Teacher Meetings
Parent/Teacher meetings are to be held throughout Week 3 (week starting 31 July). The purpose of the meetings is for your child’s classroom teacher to discuss learning goals, possible strategies to support at home and an opportunity to answer any parent/carer questions. If you haven’t received an email with more information regarding bookings, please email our admin team.
Celebrating our Students
Ryan S, one of our Year 2 students has been part of the u12s ACT Futures basketball squad, trained by NBL hall of fame legend Cal Bruton of the Bruton Basketball Foundation. Over the holidays, Ryan travelled with the team to Orange NSW for a jamboree. His team made it to the finals but finished runners up. Ryan is a passionate basketball player and is also part of the Scorers Academy Squad attending the 3x3 holiday invitational camp where he won the foul shooting competition for all ages. We are excited to see how Ryan and our Year 3/4 boys play at the up-and-coming ACT Jamie Pearlman Cup.
Rostrum- Public Speaking Competition
On Tuesday 25 July, I had the absolute pleasure of attending the interschool Rostrum quarter finals where Campbell Primary was represented by our Year 5 student, Arabella H. Her topic was ‘A New Adventure’. Arabella’s hard work was evident as she engaged the audience, describing an adventure to ancient Egypt. We are very proud of you Arabella and we hope you are too!

What a wonderful start to the term!
Many people have commented that Term 3 is their favourite term of the year, as we start to see a turn to the warmer weather and it tends to be filled with lots of enriching activities and opportunities for our students.
Barely two weeks have passed, but we have already participated in Footsteps Dance lessons (K-2), a whole-school uniform free day, Kenny Koala visits, an assembly, and a 100 days of Kindergarten celebration! Not to mention all of the incredible learning that takes place within the classrooms. Lots of learning is underway about our whole-school Global Concept of ‘Change’. We can’t wait to see the new knowledge and understandings that students gain about this concept during Term 3!
NAPLAN
This week, families of students in Years 3 and 5 should have received their child’s NAPLAN results. In each envelope, families have received an individual student report, a letter from the Education Minister and a parent information brochure. For the first time in 2023, NAPLAN is reported against ‘Proficiency Levels’ instead of the previous numerical NAPLAN bands. Student results show how they performed in each of the NAPLAN assessment areas against the four new proficiency levels of:
- Exceeding: The student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: The student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: The student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: The student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
The new proficiency levels will make better use of the online adaptive tests. Results from 2023 can not be compared to results from NAPLAN assessments taken from 2008-2022 .
NAPLAN assessments are a snapshot of a point in time in your child’s learning journey. The school uses NAPLAN data to inform some school-wide decisions, however, it is not used to form a basis for teacher judgements and assessment of student learning at a micro level. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s NAPLAN results, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or myself (kate.herrington@ed.act.edu.au)

Science Week - Family STEM Night - Save the Date
Campbell Primary School Science Buddies Workshop and Family STEM Night
With the wonderful support of The ACT Academy of Future Skills, Campbell Primary School will host a range of activities across a full day and evening of science fun.
Starting with a buddy session during the standard school day where senior Campbell Primary students will lead their younger peers through a series of activities to fit the National Science Week theme of Innovation: Powering Future Industries.
Supported by teaching staff, students become the teachers and inspire a new generation of future scientists! The day will culminate with a whole school community STEM night featuring large scale displays, workshops, interactive activities and hands on experiments.
Fun for the whole Campbell Primary community!
100 Days of Kindergarten celebration
On Friday 21 July, Kindergarten celebrated their 100th day of school.
We created 100 day crowns, played games, danced and then shared yummy party food.
In the afternoon students relaxed with ‘Friday Fun’.
Step into the Limelight Art Competition
Dear families,
Recently we ran an Art competition at Campbell Primary School to celebrate 50 years of Arts within the ACT school system.
Seven Campbell Primary students' art works were selected in the finalists. Their work will be displayed at the M16 Artspace in Griffith from Friday 4 to Sunday 27 August. Art from other schools across Canberra will also be displayed. If you have any questions concerning this, please do not hesitate to write an email to Peter Lawson at peter.lawson@ed.act.edu.au .
Looking forward to seeing the amazing work of Campbell Primary displayed for all of Canberra to see.
Kind Regards

2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey
Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 18 August to 8 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.
For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:
- A letter about the student survey outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data; and
- An email about the parent survey, including a unique link to access the survey. Genuine survey invitation emails will have the title "The 2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey is now open!" and will be sent from EDU Surveys & Evaluation with 'from' address EDU@qualtrics-survey.com.
If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, please contact your school. If you do not have an email listed with the school, please contact the front office at campbellps@ed.act.edu.au.
The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.
For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part.

Who doesn’t love to eat out occasionally? Campbell Primary School have recently been successfully accepted to be part of the Canberra Southern Cross Club community rewards program. Their theory is that when business gives back to the community that supports it, everybody wins.
The Community Rewards Program allows Canberra Southern Cross Club members to give back to the group most important to them. By nominating Campbell Primary School as your preferred community group 7.5% of your spend on food and beverages each time you visit will be donated to the school. Our goals for the funds are to expand the very successful garden club program and purchase of some representative sporting uniforms.
Nominating Campbell Primary is simple. If you are already a member of the Southern Cross Club:
- Go to com.au/rewards then select your group from the list of schools and enter your name and membership number, or
- Come into any venue and speak to our friendly Reception team to nominate your group.
Please feel free to invite friends and family to nominate Campbell Primary as well. The beauty is there is no cost! So next time you are out for that Friday night family dinner, post basketball snack, work team lunch or celebratory meal please consider nominating Campbell Primary School for your community rewards partner; 7.5% adds up fast!
Campbell Primary Recycling Program
Campbell Primary has had a long-standing commitment to caring for our environment – it’s even in our school song! We have stepped that up in recent years through the addition of solar and rainwater tanks, paper recycling, the amazing senior initiative worm farm and food waste collection, even our fantastic garden club program. Last term we added new 10c recyclables collection to the list! With the purchase of a few special wire bins and some education we have been hard at work collecting our glee cans, yakult bottles, juice boxes, up n go cartons and other eligible containers.
In just one term we have saved 720 containers from landfill while also collecting $72 for our school. That’s nearly 3 full wheelie bins of recyclables! This term we have revised our goal to try and achieve 100% of eligible containers into our special bins during school hours.
We have also found a way for our families to participate too! Introducing “ReCollect”!
What is ReCollect? A door-to-door bottle collection service that makes refundable recycling and fundraising easier than 1,2,3:
- Download the app and book a pickup using https://app.re-collect.com.au/64c07ac0fce1172780e40f63
- Place your bags outside
- Receive a refund or donate to us!
ReCollect will allow everyone to donate directly to Campbell Primary with ease. Follow the link above for more information. We are also looking into a recycling drive and bulk pick up at the end of the term. Watch this space and let’s get recycling!
Lost lunches and 'emergency' sandwiches
We are experiencing a number of students on a weekly basis who have had unsuccesful lunch orders, lost lunches or damaged lunches. If your child fits in to this category, they will receive an 'emergency' jam or vegemite sandwich from the Front Office staff.
Due to the high workload in the front office, we cannot guarantee we will be able to advise you at the time, but on these occasions your child will receive a note to bring home to you.
If your child was supposed to receive a lunch order, please take this up directly with the canteen.
The canteen contact details are 6214 3582 or canteen@campbellpandc.com as the school does not have access to Flexischools orders/information.

Help fight the spread of illness this winter
One of the best ways to help protect you and your family this winter is to get the flu vaccine. It’s important to vaccinate your child as they’re at a higher risk of serious complications if they get sick and are more likely to spread it to others.
Help fight the spread of illness this winter by staying home if you’re sick and wash your hands regularly. Please read the stop influenza flyer from ACT health (1.4 MB PDF) or visit ACT Health Influenza (Flu) page for more information.
Children's Asthma Education Service - Helping children with wheeze and asthma breathe easier
The Children’s Asthma Education Service helps children, young people, and their families understand wheezing and asthma. The service is free for people aged 1 to 18 years old with a current Medicare card and run by Registered Nurses employed by Canberra Health Services. The service teaches clients and families asthma first aid, and explains how asthma medications work and how to use them appropriately. It provides clients and their treating medical teams recommendations on ways to improve management of wheeze/asthma in line with best practice guidelines.
Appointments are face to face and are provided by Nurse Asthma Educators in Community Health Centers around the ACT.
To make an appointment call Central Health Intake on 02 5124 9977 or book online through My Digital Health Record.
As you may be aware, there has been an increase in COVID-19 cases across ACT public schools in recent weeks.
To help stop the further spread of COVID-19 in our school, we are encouraging and implementing the following measures:
- Students who are COVID-19 positive or displaying symptoms (including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, fever) should test and must not attend school while unwell.
- Parents and carers must inform schools if their child is COVID-positive.
- Keep up to date with vaccinations.
- Families can access a free rapid antigen test (RAT) from the front office of their school.
- Nasal and saliva tests are available. Test when symptomatic or as a precaution.
- Practise good hand and respiratory hygiene.
- Distance where possible.
For the latest COVID-19 advice please visit the ACT’s COVID-19 website.
