Dear families and carers,
Updating the Nature Play Space in Preschool
This year version 2 of the Early Years Learning Framework was launched. The Preschool team have investigated the updated Framework and are using it to drive their programming. Version 2 incorporates the perspectives of Australia’s first peoples and highlights the importance of ‘place’. Ms Emma and Mrs Cheater are working with their students to look at the word ‘place’. They have taken the students on walks of their local ‘places’ and the students have identified connections of their own.
To build upon this work the Preschool team are looking at ways our students can make connections to the ‘places’ at school. Our current sandpit area in the Preschool space looks a little tired and in consultation with the students, the Preschool team would like to look at options to redesign that area. The monies from the Preschool Voluntary Contributions and the recent Pyjama Day will assist in engaging a consultant for this work. We are excited about this work and the potential new experiences that can come!
Voluntary Contributions
Families would have recently received a reminder about their Voluntary Contributions. Thank you to the 39% of our families who have contributed this year. This year the Kindergarten -Year 6 monies we receive are helping to pay for some musical instruments for our music specialist program and the Preschool Contributions will be saved to help pay for the above mentioned project.
Celebrating our Students
One of our Year 5 students, Jess Wing recently returned to Townsville where she reconnected with her first basketball team and coach. In recognition of Jess’ continued commitment to basketball and making the ACT basketball team, her former coach organised a dedicated one-on-one training session with Steph Reid – Australian Opals and Townsville Fire player, who has been awarded MVP in the Women’s National Basketball league and is one of the best players in Australia.
Steph Reid is a point guard like Jess, who is also not your typical statuesque player, but is fierce and unrelenting, making her the perfect mentor. Jess is incredibly grateful to the friendships and equally important, the mentors she has in both Queensland and the ACT, who continue to guide her wherever she lives.
I can not wait to see Jess’ basketball skills when our new basketball court opens. I am sure she will teach me a thing (or two)!
Step into the Limelight Art Show
The Step into The Limelight Art Show officially opened last week. Ms Herrington and I attend the official opening. Limelight Art Show is an exhibit created by students from ACT public schools and a range of mediums are on display. Campbell Primary School is beautifully represented by:
Fatema A (Year 6), Evaan B (Year 5), Scarlett B (Year 4), Chloe C (Kindergarten), Sienna G (Year 6), Alice J (Year 2) and Peggy L (Preschool).
The exhibit is held at the M16 Gallery in Griffith and will run until the end of August.
The works on display reflect some truly talented young people. The artworks are open for viewing by the public and is well worth a visit.

STEM Night
We are fast approaching the much-anticipated event of the Campbell calendar - STEM Night!
Families from Preschool to Year 6 are invited to join us in an incredible night of hands-on learning.
The Academy of Future Skills is again providing lots of equipment, and Mrs Kristy Nguyen has been busily working with students to prepare to host the different stalls.
We are very excited and are looking forward to seeing lots of Campbell families there!
Book Week kicks off in Week 6, with students (and staff) being invited to wear a special costume to school on Tuesday 22 August.
Dress up days can be a very exciting time for lots of our little people, but many of them can also find these days overwhelming. If your child would prefer to not participate, or to arrive at school in their uniform and change into a costume later in the morning, we are happy to accommodate.
We have just received a delivery of all of the shortlisted books, which will be available in the school library very soon.
The full list of books that have been shortlisted with the Children’s Book Council of Australia can be found here: https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2023.
Happy reading!
Kate Herrington
Smart phones and smart watches at school
Please refrain from contacting your children or encouraging your children to communicate with you during school hours via their smart phones or smart watches.
We request all student-related communications between 9:00am and 3:00pm are directed through the Front Office on 6142 3580.
Food sharing
When arranging birthday celebrations, Campbell Primary School's first preference is that families order through the canteen through Flexischools, where icy poles are available.
Stationery, individually packed lollies etc are suitable to share. However, if a family wishes to bake cupcakes etc, we ask you to provide a complete list of ingredients, and that the baked goods are individual units that do not require cutting by a staff member.
These treats will be served to the students at the end of the day (if homemade/baked) for students to pop into their lunchboxes and take home to eat.
Sunsmart - hats on!
As of 1 August, students need to start wearing their hats for outside play.
After Week 3, any students not wearing a sunsmart hat, will need to stay in the shade during play time.
We encourage all our students to practise sun safe behaviour.
Lost or damaged lunches and unsuccessful lunch orders
Please remember, if your child has had an unsuccesful lunch order, a lost or damaged lunch, they will receive an 'emergency' jam or vegemite sandwich from the Front Office staff.
Due to the high workload in the front office, we cannot guarantee we will be able to advise you at the time, but on these occasions your child will receive a note to bring home to you.
If your child was supposed to receive a lunch order, please take this up directly with the canteen.
The canteen contact details are 6214 3582 or canteen@campbellpandc.com as the school does not have access to Flexischools orders/information.
With only one disabled carpark at the front of the school and mutliple families needing to use this spot, please do not park there for extended periods of time - only using it when required.
The school is investigating creating more disabled parking spots but until this has been arranged, we request your assistance and consideration.
2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey - Copy
Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 18 August to 8 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.
For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:
- A letter about the student survey outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data; and
- An email about the parent survey, including a unique link to access the survey. Genuine survey invitation emails will have the title "The 2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey is now open!" and will be sent from EDU Surveys & Evaluation with 'from' address EDU@qualtrics-survey.com.
If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, please contact your school. If you do not have an email listed with the school, please contact the front office at campbellps@ed.act.edu.au.
The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.
For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part.

Year 3 and 4 Boys Represent Campbell at the Northside Jamie Pearlman Cup
On Thursday 3 August, a very spirited group of ten Campbell Primary students made their way to Belconnen Basketball Stadium to compete for the first time in the Jamie Pearlman Cup. With varying levels of experience in the sport and from different grades and classes, the boys came together as a team in a very impressive way, led from the front by team captain Ollie J. From the start, the boys demonstrated a fantastic attitude and approach to the games and were rewarded with early wins against Ainslie and Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, the boys were beaten in their final game against a very strong Macgregor team, missing out on a semi final berth by a single point! We are incredibly proud of the team.
Campbell Primary would like to commend not just the team who travelled for the carnival, but each and every student who signed up and participated in the try outs. They made the selection process very difficult in the best way, and we wish we could have taken all of them! A huge shout out to “Coach” Jones for taking on the team for this fantastic event. As always these things don’t happen without our community and we would like to thank the parents who helped out with bench duties for the day and all the parents who came along to support.
These events, besides just making memories, have a flow on effect here at school and we are excited to see so many students playing basketball during recess and lunch – hopefully it’s happening at home as well! Sport has a well-known physical and health benefit but can also promote teamwork, communication, leadership, connection and positive mental health. If your child has been inspired you can find details of community competitions and holiday clinics at the Basketball ACT website.
Trials for the Sue Geh Cup on Wednesday 13 September (Year 3 and 4 girls) are underway and again we have awesome interest levels and lots of enthusiasm!

Camo 4 A Cause call for support
Camo for a cause day
Can you help?
Campbell Primary School are rolling up their camo pattern sleeves in order to raise funds for the charity Legacy. On Friday 1 September, we will be asking students to wear camouflage clothing, hats or bandanas in any colour for a gold coin donation. To make the day extra special we are running a range of fun military themed activities for the students between 11:30am and 1:15pm. The RMC Pep Band will be providing the soundtrack for an awesome day, there will be an equipment and drill display from the always polished Federation Guard, plus an interactive first aid display is also on the cards.
We would still love to see more! Do you have some amazing equipment that would make a great display? Is your unit king of the tug-of-war and want to test their prowess against 100 energetic kids? Do you know some red short wearing fitness experts that might like to shepherd kids through a makeshift obstacle course? We won’t say no to a helicopter or a RAAF hot air balloon either! We are open to any and all ideas and every contribution big or small would be highly valued. There is an official DACC request that any support can be linked back to; reference 5695300623 (POC is WO2 Gordon at JOSS).
The recent helicopter tragedy during Ex Talisman Sabre brings to light just how important the work of Legacy is in supporting the widows and children of veterans who pass away during service or any time after. This is their 100th year and they still have 43,000 partners and children they support every day. If you would like to learn more about Legacy please watch the videos here or here (trigger warning, viewer discretion is advised) or visit their website https://www.legacy.com.au/ .
More information for students will follow in the next newsletter; please note the save the date! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to make contact via email at any time: Karyn.heitmann@ed.act.edu.auNational Science Week events - 12 – 20 August

Home Run Heroes Junior Softball Program!
Campbell Primary School were very excited to play host to an introductory session of the Home Run Heroes junior softball program on Wednesday of this week, and boy didn’t we get lucky with the weather! Featuring a 40 minute session with a specialist coach from Softball Australia, students from Years 1 to 4 were introduced to the basic skills of T-ball including batting, fielding, throwing and catching through modified game play.
It was great to see students cheering each other on and getting right into the excitement of the game. Feedback from the coach was very positive and we are delighted to share that Coach Karthik will return for a Year 5 and 6 session during a very special event later this term.
For those inspired to give softball or T-ball a try this summer, there is a 4 week after school introductory program coming up in Hawker (see the attached flyer) or club information can be found at the website www.act.softball.org.au/play-softball/junior-league/.
Campbell Primary School Fundraising
Who doesn’t love to eat out occasionally? Campbell Primary School have recently been successfully accepted to be part of the Canberra Southern Cross Club community rewards program. Their theory is that when business gives back to the community that supports it, everybody wins.
The Community Rewards Program allows Canberra Southern Cross Club members to give back to the group most important to them. By nominating Campbell Primary School as your preferred community group 7.5% of your spend on food and beverages each time you visit will be donated to the school. Our goals for the funds are to expand the very successful garden club program and purchase of some representative sporting uniforms.
Nominating Campbell Primary is simple. If you are already a member of the Southern Cross Club:
- Go to com.au/rewards then select your group from the list of schools and enter your name and membership number, or
- Come into any venue and speak to our friendly Reception team to nominate your group.
Please feel free to invite friends and family to nominate Campbell Primary as well. The beauty is there is no cost! So next time you are out for that Friday night family dinner, post basketball snack, work team lunch or celebratory meal please consider nominating Campbell Primary School for your community rewards partner; 7.5% adds up fast!
Campbell Primary School Recycling Program
Campbell Primary School has had a long-standing commitment to caring for our environment – it’s even in our school song! We have stepped that up in recent years through the addition of solar and rainwater tanks, paper recycling, the amazing senior initiative worm farm and food waste collection, even our fantastic garden club program. Last term we added new 10c recyclables collection to the list! With the purchase of a few special wire bins and some education we have been hard at work collecting our glee cans, yakult bottles, juice boxes, up n go cartons and other eligible containers.
In just one term we have saved 720 containers from landfill while also collecting $72 for our school. That’s nearly 3 full wheelie bins of recyclables! This term we have revised our goal to try and achieve 100% of eligible containers into our special bins during school hours.
We have also found a way for our families to participate too! Introducing “ReCollect”!
What is ReCollect? A door-to-door bottle collection service that makes refundable recycling and fundraising easier than 1,2,3:
- Download the app and book a pickup using https://app.re-collect.com.au/64c07ac0fce1172780e40f63
- Place your bags outside
- Receive a refund or donate to us!
ReCollect will allow everyone to donate directly to Campbell Primary with ease. Follow the link above for more information. We are also looking into a recycling drive and bulk pick up at the end of the term. Watch this space and let’s get recycling!
