Dear families and carers,
Hard Surface Court- UPDATE
This week I was able to see our new hard surface court. The court has now been painted with basketball, netball, and volleyball grids as well as a couple of handball grids painted under the shade, next to the multipurpose court. This week the landscaping will begin. I should receive confirmation of a completion date very soon. We would like to organise something special/fun for the official opening. Some staff have suggested a teachers vs students’ basketball game! Watch this space for updates.
STEM Night
Science week was celebrated last week and the highlight for lots of our students was the STEM Night. This hugely successful evening was organised by our science specialist Ms Nguyen. Over the last two years, Ms Nguyen has collaborated with the Academy of Future Skills to produce engaging teaching and learning programs. Just like last year, the Academy of Future Skills volunteered their time and resources to support our STEM night.
The STEM Night was also an opportunity for the students who participate in the STEM enrichment program and some of our junior students to run specific STEM activities. The students were given ‘shifts’ over the evening and provided with mini workshops, run by Ms Nguyen in preparation for the STEM Night. It was amazing to see how responsible our students were during their ‘shifts’, and how empowering this experience was.
For a whole school event to run smoothly requires an enormous effort. A very big thank you to Ms Nguyen, Academy of Future Skills, our STEM guides, and our families who attended the event.
2023 Climate and Satisfaction Survey
Thank you to our families who have already completed the 2023 Satisfaction Survey. The feedback and data from the surveys help drive the school’s strategic direction. In response to the feedback received from the 2022 parents/carers survey, the following initiatives have been implemented:
- Utilising our morning assemblies (Yuma) to celebrate student achievements and award PBL badges.
- Seesaw, Facebook and newsletter are utilised to celebrate student achievements.
- Celebrating all student participation during the Athletics Carnival, providing with certificates for winning heats.
- Prioritising pride in the school environment by scheduling opportunities to tidy the playground.
- Consistent and regular use of Seesaw- Preschool to Year 6.
- Continuing to build our Cultural Integrity team including welcoming a community member and organising guest speakers and presenters for the students.
Emails were sent directly to families last week. If you have not received an email, please contact our front office.

Book Week
And just like that, we’ve reached the end of Book Week for 2023! The parade on Tuesday was a joyous sea of students and staff dressed as Wallys, Harry Potters, superheroes and many other beloved characters, and even an actual full stop! It was amazing to see how engaged and enthusiastic students have been this week - not to mention the creativity that went into many of the costumes! The inaugural “Books and Bikkies” sessions in the library have also been a great success, hopefully to become a feature on the Campbell Primary calendar for many years to come. We are looking forward to celebrating more books at the Book Fair in Week 8!
ILP/PLP Reviews
Families of students on PLP/ILP’s can expect to receive reviewed documents next week. Throughout the last semester, teachers have been reflecting on plans and determining ways that they can be improved to best meet the needs of students. The updated versions of PLP/ILP’s aim to support learning for the rest of the year.
Meetings with families are not generally organised at this time, however, please feel welcome to get in touch with myself or your child’s teacher if you would like to request a meeting. If you would like a signed copy of your child’s ILP/PLP, please return the enclosed copy so that it can be signed and returned.
Towards the end of Term 4, parent/carer meetings will be organised to support your child’s transition to 2024.

Campbell Primary School STEM Night
Last week was Science Week and Campbell Primary School were thrilled to welcome friends and family of our community into our learning communities for our 4th STEM night. Planned by our senior science extension program students as a project with Ms Nguyen, and hosted exclusively on the night by student volunteers, it was an amazing night of physics, chemistry, technology and more! Didn’t our STEM guides do a fantastic job? We have such an awesome team of future leaders at Campbell Primary School.
These events take a lot of support and Campbell Primary School would like to extend some very special thanks to those who helped make it such a success. The Academy of Future Skills is pivotal to our STEM learning at Campbell Primary School. Two years into our partnership, their instruction, support and access to equipment has been invaluable not just for STEM night but in our everyday learning. We can’t thank them enough for their amazing specialist support (and their planetarium!).
Thanks also to our always effervescent P&C for support with the BBQ and making our families feel so welcome.
We were also very fortunate to receive an ASTA Science Week grant which we used to purchase the “Makey Makey” electronics equipment that was not only a hit on STEM night but will also support electrical circuit learning at Campbell Primary School for years to come.
Finally, we wanted to thank all the parents and friends for their attendance and engagement with their children. We hope you had a great time, and we look forward to seeing what Science Week 2024 will bring!
Freaky Friday the Musical at the Australian Defence Force Academy
Almost two weeks ago, Campbell Primary students from Years 4 to 6 had the incredible privilege to be invited to attend a very special schools’ matinee performance of the musical Freaky Friday, performed by the ADFA Performing Arts Company. Our second year attending, it was a wonderful opportunity to engage with our local community while also exposing students to quality amateur arts and performance.
Over 130 students and 8 staff members took up the opportunity to attend, alongside smaller groups from several other Canberra schools. The performance itself was wonderful with students fully engaged in the music and colour of live theatre and we were thrilled to see the addition of a live band for this years’ event! The favourite character was definitely that of little brother Fletcher; with the very colourful introduction of a military interpretation of the “PE teacher” character a hit with the adults. Students were given the brief opportunity to meet the performers after the show; many made the most of the time to ask questions, get autographs, and take photos. Hopefully there are some inspired future singing and dancing super stars for CPS performances and beyond!
One of the most exciting additions was that of a snack stall this year, with students taking full advantage of the range of sweet treats. This formed part of the ADFA performing arts groups’ fundraising efforts for the charity Legacy. A big thankyou to all the families for your support for this cause - we apologise for the cavities!
The staff and students of Campbell Primary wanted to extend our heartfelt thanks to our ADFA neighbours for this wonderful and well-run opportunity. We also wanted to acknowledge our senior student group who represented Campbell beautifully and who were respectful guests and audience members. We can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next year!
In Canberra sun protection is required for part or most of each day between August and May. The end of May is ‘Hats Off Day’ whilst the beginning of August is ‘Hats On Again’ for all of us.
Students with no hat will be required to play in a well shaded area. This is informally known as ‘No Hat Play in the Shade’.
Families, please ensure your child comes to school wearing a sun safe hat.
After hours duty of care
At the 3:00pm bell, duty of care is returned to the families either directly or via after school care arrangements.
For families wanting extended play time after 3:00pm, please consider the park close to the Campbell Village shops.
Disables Parking spaces
With only one disabled carpark at the front of the school and mutliple families needing to use this spot, please do not park there for extended periods of time - only using it when required.
The school is investigating creating more disabled parking spots but until this has been arranged, we request your assistance and consideration.
Do keep in mind, the abundance of available parking bays. Remembering if you turn your car ignition off, it is considered you have parked the car. Please ensure you always do so legally and safely.
Lost or damaged lunches and unsuccessful lunch orders
Please remember, if your child has had an unsuccesful lunch order, a lost or damaged lunch, they will receive an 'emergency' jam or vegemite sandwich from the Front Office staff.
Due to the high workload in the front office, we cannot guarantee we will be able to advise you at the time, but on these occasions your child will receive a note to bring home to you.
If your child was supposed to receive a lunch order, please take this up directly with the canteen.
The canteen contact details are 6214 3582 or canteen@campbellpandc.com as the school does not have access to Flexischools orders/information.
Camo 4 A Cause - call for support
Camo for a cause day
Can you help?
Campbell Primary School are rolling up their camo pattern sleeves in order to raise funds for the charity Legacy. On Friday 1 September, we will be asking students to wear camouflage clothing, hats or bandanas in any colour for a gold coin donation. To make the day extra special we are running a range of fun military themed activities for the students between 11:30am and 1:15pm. The RMC Pep Band will be providing the soundtrack for an awesome day, there will be an equipment and drill display from the always polished Federation Guard, plus an interactive first aid display is also on the cards.
We would still love to see more! Do you have some amazing equipment that would make a great display? Is your unit king of the tug-of-war and want to test their prowess against 100 energetic kids? Do you know some red short wearing fitness experts that might like to shepherd kids through a makeshift obstacle course? We won’t say no to a helicopter or a RAAF hot air balloon either! We are open to any and all ideas and every contribution big or small would be highly valued. There is an official DACC request that any support can be linked back to; reference 5695300623 (POC is WO2 Gordon at JOSS).
The recent helicopter tragedy during Ex Talisman Sabre brings to light just how important the work of Legacy is in supporting the partners and children of veterans who pass away during service or any time after. This is their 100th year and they still have 43,000 partners and children they support every day. If you would like to learn more about Legacy please watch the videos here or here (trigger warning, viewer discretion is advised) or visit their website https://www.legacy.com.au/ .
More information for students will follow in the next newsletter; please note the save the date! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to make contact via email at any time: Karyn.heitmann@ed.act.edu.au
