Campbell Primary School’s new Vision and Mission
Over the last semester, one of our incredible executives, Kerry Johnstone (Ms J) led staff, students, and families in updating our school’s Vision and Mission/Values. Ms J ran serval staff meetings and worked in classrooms to gather input from our community.
Our Vision and Mission/Values aims at creating a culture at Campbell Primary School that drives our strategic planning, reflects the needs of our community whilst supporting teaching and learning. We hope our Vision and Mission/Values speaks for all members of our community.
We have engaged a graphic designer to develop a visual representation of this work and are looking at ways to incorporate the visuals at school, in learning spaces and on our website.
The new Vision and Mission/Values are as follows:
Campbell Primary School’s Vision is to develop a community of engaged learners.
We create an environment that:
- Is inclusive and respectful
- Nurtures an inquiring mindset that leads to lifelong learning
- Fosters a strong sense of belonging
Our Mission/Values
At Campbell Primary School we are:
Curious
We approach our learning as self-directed, critical thinkers. We enable creativity allowing for innovation and problem solving. We are courageous in our thinking, approaching our learning with wonder and purpose.
Connected
We build a community that is welcoming. We act sustainably to deepen our connection to our world. We collaborate through learning and play.
Caring
We are invested in the wellbeing of our community. We walk on Country respectfully, celebrating diversity. We act with kindness and value friendship.

Maths Trek Teacher Professional Development
Next year all schools across Australia will be reporting against and creating teaching program based on the updated Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum (Home | V9 Australian Curriculum). To support our teachers’ programs, explicit teaching and reporting, we have engaged with the Math Trek team. Maths Trek is a mathematics teaching resource for Kindergarten to Year 6 students.
This resource offers a sequential scope and sequence, programming and planning supports as well as online interactive whiteboard resources. As part of the 2024 book packs our Kindergarten to Year 6 families will purchase a student workbook and our Year 2-6 will also utilise an online platform that focuses on mental computation.
We are excited to be on this journey, continuing to offer highly engaging, hands-on, interactive mathematics program.

Superstar Student Author- Scarlett Bonora
I always love when I am on playground duty and students approach me for a chat. Recently one of our Year 4 students, Scarlett Bonora and I were talking, and she mentioned that she is the author of a novel. This novel has been a passion project of Scarlett’s and in her free time she writes! Scarlett very graciously shared her novel with me, and I was blown away. Her descriptive language, character development and plot were beautifully crafted. Her novel, titled, “Scarlett Crimson and the Oblivious Purple Light” is not complete, however, it is too good not to share. Please click on the link to read the first five chapters of her book.

Preschool Philosophy Statement
Thank you to the preschool families who responded to our callout for feedback and consultation in the development of a renewed Preschool Philosophy Statement. It is very exciting to have received information about what the preschoolers and their families value about Campbell Preschool. Responses were very positive and highlighted the warm, supportive and nurturing environment that Emma, Kylie and our support staff create in our preschool.
A draft of the new Preschool Philosophy Statement is below. If you would like to provide any feedback, please feel welcome to get in touch!

Academic Reports
Academic reports will be emailed to Kindergarten to Year 6 families on Thursday 7 December. These reports aim to inform families of their child/ren’s academic progress and achievements, graded against the Australian Curriculum’s Achievement Standards. Reports will also contain a general comment from classroom teachers that describe the learning that has taken place throughout the semester. Families who wish to discuss their child/ren’s reports are welcome to contact the school to arrange an appointment during Week 10.
End of Year Individual Learning Plan (ILP) Meetings
ILP/PLP Meetings will be taking place next week. Thank you to those families who have responded to invitations to let us know if they will be in attendance. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss students on ILP/PLP’s current engagement with learning and school, reflect on their outcomes for the year and identify potential goals for future growth. We are looking forward to working with families to support these learners.

At the end of October, Kim Bland won the BSO role at the new East Gungahlin High School, Shirley Smith School. Kim has been a long standing member of our school community and we wish her well at her new school.
The school has not been left unsupported though, as Tony Sawyer has joined our team as our new permanent BSO. Tony has been working part time with us for most of the year and started full time with us from last week. Tony has a lot of experience in schools having worked in various ACT schools after moving to Canberra from Bathurst, where he was the BSO at Bathurst High School.
He has fitted in perfectly with the CPS family and is already becoming valued and respected by staff and students alike.
Carparking
Carparking in the main school carpark remains an issue, causing a number of near misses.
Please remember these very common sense rules:
Parking
- Do not park in the ‘Kiss & Drop’ zone – if you need to get out of your car please park in a designated bay
- Do not park in the ‘Loading Bay’ zone – if you need to get out of your car please park in a designated bay
- Do not park in those areas with painted white lines – if you need to get out of your car please park in a designated bay
- Do not park against the centre kerb – if you need to get out of your car please park in a designated bay
- Do not park on the centre grass – if you need to get out of your car please park in a designated bay
Driving
- All roads surround the school have 40km per hour restrictions from 8:00am till 4:00pm
- All school carparks have 10km per hour restrictions
- Please follow the arrows and go in the correct direction in our carparks
- Do not drive in the bus stop lane
Please drive and park safely around our school - you have our children’s lives in your hands, look after them.
We have now officially wrapped the Canberra United CUBS football/soccer program for 2023! 5 amazing sessions have been completed for all of our years 1-3 classes. The majority of these sessions have been professionally coached by none other than Chilean international forward Maria Rojas, and Young Matilda’s International Mary Stanic-Floody. Both are current Canberra United players and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that our students have learned a lot from.
We would like to extend a special thanks to Dylan and the team at Canberra United for the opportunity for local schools to participate in this free and comprehensive grass roots program. We had so much fun and improved our skills greatly across the 5 weeks; it didn’t even feel like learning! We hope that this is a partnership that will continue to grow and would love to see Canberra United and CUBS back and Campbell Primary in 2024.
If you are interested in private coaching for your littlest future Socceroo or Matilda from the girls there is a flyer attached with the details. If you are interested in catching a game (I went last weekend – it’s a fantastic afternoon out) check out the website here. Their next home game is the 10th of December.
UC Capitals and The Tradies Club Hoops Program
How lucky are we! This time it is Year 5 (with a few lucky Year 4 students) benefiting from coaching from professional athletes! With four x one hour sessions spread across several weeks we are making the most of our new court facilities improving our skills, fitness, teamwork, communication, and leadership through a series of basketball drills and games.
So far we have played host to Captains and legends Jade Melbourne and Alex Sharp, and super stars Alex Bunton and “Shaq” Shakera Reilly – we can’t wait to see who will come on Monday for our final session!
In addition to this amazing opportunity we have been gifted 120 tickets to the next Capitals home game on Friday 8 December at the Convention Centre, against the Sydney Flames. We would like to fill the Convention Centre with Campbell Primary School families and help lift the roof at the game, so if you would like to come and support our girls, please pop by the office or email Karyn.heitmann@ed.act.edu.au. It will be 'first in' and we ask if you can’t use the tickets for any reason to please them to the school to be reissued. What a great opportunity to gather as a community for a fun evening out before end of year! There is also a Caps meet and greet THIS Sunday at the Tradies Club Dickson. More information is available in the attached flyer.
A huge thank you to the Tradies Club for their continued sponsorship of this amazing program, Griffin from UC Caps for his ongoing support and coordination, and of course to the players for gifting their time and knowledge (and lots of basketballs) to help the next generation develop.
We are VERY excited to announce a likely return of the Hoops Program during Term 1, 2024. Watch this space!
Dear Parents/Carers,
Contagious illnesses like gastroenteritis (gastro), flu, colds, fevers may at times impact on students across our school system.
There has been an increase in the number of outbreaks of gastro at Campbell Primary School this week and we all need to do our part to help prevent further spread. Health Guidelines state that students should say home for 48 hours after symptoms have stopped.
For more information about viral gastroenteritis – including the spread, symptoms and treatment of gastro - please read the ACT Health factsheet at What is Viral Gastroenteritis (act.gov.au)
Anyone with vomiting or diarrhoea should rest at home and not attend work, school or childcare, or visit a hospital or residential care facility, until vomiting and diarrhoea have stopped for 48 hours (2 days). During this time, they should not prepare food for others, or care for patients, children or the elderly.
Further information can be found on the ACT Health Fact Sheet on Viral Gastroenteritis at this link:
https://www.health.act.gov.au/sites/default/files/2023-03/What%20is%20viral%20gastroenteritis.pdf
We are asking all of our families to have a thorough look at home and in their children's school bags for any Campbell Primary School library books, please.
All books must be returmed to the library by the end of Week 9 (Friday, 8 December).
Friday 1 December is the last day the library is open for students.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Please remind your children, during the summer months to wear a sun smart hat and to apply sunscreen.
Second hand uniform shop change of date
Please note, our second hand uniform shop is no longer open on a Tuesday.
Our second hand uniform shop is now operating on Friday afternoons out of the new canteen, from 2:30pm till 3:15pm.
Orders can also be placed online by emailing uniformshop@campbellpandc.com.
Futsal Court update and Fundraising rewards
In exciting news, the P&C Committee recently formerly committed funds to support the construction of the Futsal Court at Campbell Primary School - we are looking forward to seeing it installed in early 2024.
To our many supporters - if you selected a reward when making your pledge, the majority of these are still available for pick up. You can collect them from the BER - just ask one of our friendly CASAC staff.
Any rewards not collected by the end of the year will be repurposed.
Get planning for 2024 with upcoming student-free days
From 2024, there will be 4 student-free days for ACT public schools - the first day of each school term. Student-free days for 2024 are:

· Term 2, Monday 29 April 2024

Three-year-old preschool list of partner providers for 2024
Universal access to quality early childhood education for three-year-old children is a key initiative under Set Up for Success: An Early Childhood Strategy for the ACT. From the start of 2024, free three-year-old preschool will be available to all Canberra families for 300 hours per year. The three-year-old preschool program will be delivered through participating Early Childhood Education and Care services (long day care and non-government school settings). Over 130 services across the ACT have partnered to deliver three-year-old preschool in 2024.
A list of partner provider services is now available on the Education Directorate website, along with Frequently Asked Questions and further information for families.
Canberra Institute of Technology’s school formal specials
The Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) is offering school formal specials for hair and beauty services and wearable floral arrangements. Hair and beauty services, including hairstyling and spray tans, are available until the Friday, 24 November 2023 and wearable florals are available to order until Friday, 8 December 2023.
For more information on how to book these services, read CIT’s school formal specials (434 kb PDF).
Expired RATs and Stock within Schools
Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) are no longer stocked within the Education Directorate. If your school requires RATs, this purchase must come out of the school’s budget. Share the information on where families can collect free RATs from ACT Libraries in your school’s newsletter.
RATs that have expired can be disposed of in general waste. Where stock that requires disposal is minimal, we encourage the cardboard and paper to be recycled and the remaining contents disposed of in general waste bins. Where the stock levels are too large for this to be feasible the entire contents can be disposed of in general waste.

Inquiry into literacy and numeracy in ACT public schools
The ACT Government announced an independent inquiry into literacy and numeracy performance in the ACT. Through the inquiry we will gain local insights into the opportunities for strengthening literacy and numeracy outcomes for all ACT public school students, with a particular focus on equity. The inquiry will also look at how supports for educators and students could be enhanced.
The inquiry is an opportunity to look at what we are doing well and opportunities to strengthen our education system.
How to get involved
An independent Expert Panel will lead the inquiry. They will consider the views of academics, educators, unions, parents and carers, and students. This will be done through calls for public submissions and stakeholder engagement.
To view the Panel Membership, Terms of Reference and more you can visit: www.education.act.gov.au/literacyandnumeracyinquiry
